Home repairs range from quick fixes to jobs that reveal deeper problems. A useful request separates what you can see from what a professional should assess.

Describe the symptom, not your diagnosis

Say what is happening: “water staining on the ceiling below the upstairs bathroom” or “a door that scrapes after the recent rain.” Keep your own theory separate so the provider can assess the actual cause.

Note when the problem started

A repair that appeared suddenly after a storm or a remodel is different from one that has worsened over years. Include that timing and anything that makes it better or worse. It helps the provider plan and avoid a wasted trip.

Flag safety and urgency

Be clear about anything involving water, gas, electricity, smoke or a blocked exit. Those are signals to stop and call a licensed specialist rather than waiting for a general handyman quote.
